Our Kids Earn Their 75th Jr. Ranger Badge

I often lose track of how many Jr. Ranger badges my kids have earned which got me into a little trouble when we hit 50 and didn’t know it. 50 badges seemed like a good milestone for celebrating and the kids were a little disappointed that we had skipped it. “How about 70? 75?” I…

Michigan Upper Peninsula Pasty (PAST-EE) Taste Test

Traveling through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan without trying a pasty would have been a travesty. A pasty is a baked pastry, traditionally filled with meat, vegetables, rutabagas, seasoning and then baked to perfection. It is pronounced Past-Tee, but more run together, like Past-ee. Mispronounce it and you will be gently corrected. It has a…

Sometimes We Just Need a Break

Full time travel burnout is real. Our life may look carefree and happy all the time, but behind the scenes there’s hours of planning, stress over work, getting school done, and wondering where on earth we are going to stay that night. I also stress about “seeing all the things” so when there is a…

YES! All of this! I was getting burned out before we got to Yellowstone and it continued because the first week were here we were in the park nearly every day. I hit a wall. The past 2 weeks we’ve spent nearly every day at the camper just hanging out, catching up on work and school, and loving on each other. It’s been SO nice! We have just under a week left here and we’re all so antsy to get back on the road. It’s, by far, the longest we’ve ever stayed in one place. It was a really nice break.ReplyCancel

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (aka The UP)

Travel Dates: August 7-17, 2015 We left the Dells, and arrived in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula unceremoniously on Friday afternoon, August 14, 2015 after driving up from Walmart down near Green Bay, Wisconsin. Totally ignored the time zone change to Eastern Time as we searched along the west shore of Lake Michigan for a place to…

  • I went to college in Houghton for a short time after HS. Going back up after Thanksgiving that year that year we got 24′ of snow in 20 hours and school close for the 2nd time in 100 years. We got stranded in Ishpeming because the lake had covered the highway. I remember a car encrusted in ice and looking like a Natural History Museum display. We got the last hotel room in town and had 5-6 guys crammed in there just waiting it out.

Time to become trolls (get down under the bridge…;)ReplyCancel

Lol! That sounds epic. We did see the “snow meter” along the road up to Copper Harbor. My kids about died – “Let’s move HERE!” they said. No. Way.ReplyCancel

Ah, pictures of the UP! I adore it up there. It’s been much too long.ReplyCancel

I just read your complete post; I wish I had seen you folks coming, earlier. I’m a national park ranger at Pictured Rocks Nat’l Lakeshore and a new airstreamer! The park is inundated with visitors this year, but still a beautiful place to visit – I’m glad you were able to see some of the key places in the park (as your pictures indicate).ReplyCancel

  • […] We spent 10 days exploring the “UP” as the locals call it. We started in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, ate a lot of pasties, learned about mining on the Keewinaw Peninsula, and hiked  in the Porcupine Mountains. There’s definitely something for everyone! […]ReplyCancel
