It’s a Little Frosty This Halloween

I LOVE Halloween, and costumes, and decorations and all the fun exciting stuff that comes with little kids and Halloween. We figure it won’t last forever, they’ll eventually grow out of “cute” and be more into “scary” so I’m going to enjoy it while we can!

I have an entire post dedicated to how we celebrated in Lincoln City, OR but this post is all about the COSTUMES!

Inspired by an Instagram friend, Andrew decided to be Jack Frost for Halloween and he was perfect! Everyone kept asking how we got his hair so white (he’s definitely a natural), and we’d hear whispers of even older teenager kids saying “Wow! That’s Jack Frost” as they passed by. Andrew ate it up.

His sweatshirt came from an Etsy shop which we ordered earlier in the month and it arrived just barely in the nick of time. Sam put together the staff out of PVC pipe, glue, blue painter’s tape, brown spray paint, and some white craft paint. Epic, huh? His pants we found at Goodwill and then I just cut up the bottom and we added a little white crafting paint to those as well. I asked if he wanted ribbon or something tied around the bottom and he said, “Nah, I look good the way I am.”  Yes sweetie, you do.

Rachel decided long ago she wanted to be Elsa. Normally I try to dissuade my kids from being the “popular” thing that year, but this time I just let her roll with it. After looking everywhere, we finally found a costume in her size on Etsy and it shipped over from China. While a little flimsy, she absolutely loves it and tried it on a few times begging me to play the soundtrack so she could act the part. It was adorable.

We found some white shoes at Goodwill, a tiara at Joann’s for a dollar, braided her hair and she was good to go!

Cara. I’m pretty sure we could dress her in a garbage bag and she’d overwhelm everyone with her cuteness. We found her hat at the Halloween Central store that pops up seasonal in some towns. We went in looking for Elsa, and came out with Olaf. She loves it, and I’m happy its something we can reuse all winter.

Pants are from Goodwill, and the two shirts we ordered online from Target. The brown is actually kind of a nasty color and we’ll probably donate that, but the white one goes with her Sunday skirt that hasn’t had a matching top for months. Total score. We picked up the sparkly felt at JoAnn’s and just safety pinned them on.

This was her favorite way to wear her hat. “Look mom! I’m Olaf and I like warm hugs.”

This one. I can almost see her as a teenager. That’s more scary than any Halloween costume.

Totally love the ensemble together! Every time we’d feel a bit chilly that night we’d yell, “Jack! Stop making it so cold!” Andrew thought it was funny the first couple of times but it quickly wore off. Poor kid.

We also had our friends come over quick for some photos. Love their super hero awesomeness! And that pink hair! It’s totally to die for!

And some of all 5. We had so much celebrating and hanging out with our new friends. We were all sad to leave!

Total win on the costumes this year! They are already scheming next year’s costumes. Any guesses on where we will be?

Getting a Little Homesick Over Halloween – Lincoln City, Oregon

About a month ago, we decided we needed to sit somewhere for at least a week. A few weeks of 2-3 day short stops were wearing on us, and we just needed time to get some
cleaning done and catch up on other small repairs and chores. Looking ahead, we also knew Halloween was coming up and being in one place the week before to get ready for the
holiday sounded fabulous. As much as we don’t like to plan ahead and make reseravtions, holidays turn out to be the exception.

We choose Lincoln City for two reasons: it was on the Oregon Coast (which was on our list of places to see) and we had Instagram friends who we were excited to meet.

When We Visited: October 24-31, 2014
Where We Stayed: Devil’s Lake Campground – Full hookups, right in town, it seemed like a great except for the flooding in the campsites. There was so much rain that week that many of the campsites were their own lake. Not exactly encouraging. Fortunately, we were able to change sites to one that was more dry and our stay got infinitely better. There were more than a few doubts about our choice of accommodations that first night.
Ages of Kids: 9, 7, 4

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, ranking right up there was Christmas. I especially love decorating and costumes as evidenced by past years. Last year in Virginia was a bit crazy and I was determined to do better this year. We actually planned ahead and I ordered costumes from Etsy, sent them to the Waller’s house, and we started looking around at thrift stores for other pieces of our costumes way back on Whidbey Island. See? So prepared. We decorated the Airstream, and read Halloween books every night before bed.

We managed one treat craft, and dropped in on the local library’s Halloween party. It was pretty small town, but the face painting artist was AMAZING. She paints tiles, and her skill was evident. It was also a good test run for our costumes.

Halloween Eve we carved pumpkins with the Waller’s. Don’t judge our use of gloves. It was the only way we could get the girls to clean out their own pumpkins. Andrew, however, fully enjoyed the slimy experience. We were so proud of Rachel and Andrew who drew and carved their pumpkins all by themselves.

Halloween 2014_28

Halloween morning started out with our typical pumpkin pancake breakfast (cooked this time by Rachel), and then we met up at the Waller’s church to help set up for the Harvest Festival later that evening. Amazingly, it made me homesick. That doesn’t happen often, but setting up tables and chairs in a church, getting ready for carnival type games, and a chili dinner completely overwhelmed me with homesickness for our church family back in Lehi, Utah. Every year we’d have a “Soup & Spook” event that involved, you guessed it, carnival games, chili, good friends, and a Trunk or Treat in the parking lot. It was something we looked forward to every year. I was pretty excited that we’d get to celebrate this year with new friends doing something similar.

Our kids totally rocked the cold, snowy theme this year. After a comment on an Instagram photo months ago about how Andrew looked like the “real” Jack Frost, we couldn’t resist. Rachel was Elsa from Day #1 (her and everyone else), and we talked Cara out of Merida (from Brave) and into Olaf to complete the ensemble. I love their Halloween photos so much, they got their own post. You are welcome.

Halloween 2014_40

Bring on the party! This community knows how to have an event. The games were great, the food was delicious, and the kids ran around collecting as much candy in their treat bags as they absolutely could.

Halloween 2014_87

The hat totally made the outfit. I don’t think most people realized how ridiculously hilarious our costumes really were.

Our awesome friends the Waller’s:

For our first, official, on the road Halloween, I feel like we did a pretty sweet job. I don’t know what next year will hold (or where we will be!) but if we can come close to pulling this off again we’ll be okay!

I’ll Never Look at Yogurt Pretzels the Same Way – Our Halloween Craft

Super Easy Halloween PretzelsOne craft. That’s all I knew I could probably handle, so I picked one and didn’t stress about the gazillion other cute, Pinterest-y Halloween, DIY, Classroom activities we COULD be doing. My kids don’t know. They certainly don’t care, and as long as we do something it’s good enough for everyone.

We’ve been spending the last week in Lincoln City, OR to prep for Halloween. We have friends nearby that graciously allowed us to mail packages (aka Halloween costumes) to their house since shipping from Etsy is usually unpredictable.

While perusing the Hallween issue of Family Fun Magazine that my mom sent with our last mail package, we noticed this super easy, fun craft that turned yogurt pretzels into bug-eyed beings. Plus, the kids got a kick out of it!

IMG_20141027_150325

What you need: Yogurt Pretzels, candy melts (of various colors – we did orange & green), sprinkles or small candies.

Instructions: Place yogurt pretzels on parchment paper. Heat candy melts according to instructions (ours was via the stove method). Spoon each color into a separate bag and snip the corner. Pipe candy melt into “eye” holes of the pretzels and add sprinkles or small candies before the chocolate hardens.

IMG_20141027_145938IMG_20141027_145930

See? Super easy! With our leftover candy melt we just made swirl shapes on the parchment paper and the kids went to town with the sprinkles.

Favorite Halloween Children’s Books of 2014

favorite halloween books 2014

To get excited for the Halloween season, we decided to pause our regular before bedtime story, and pull out some Halloween books instead. I had my mother go through her collection, and she included 7 or 8 when she sent us our mail and the rest we’ve been able to get through our library overdrive or from the Kindle Unlimited Program.

We’ve read some bad ones, and some really great ones, but mostly it has just been a lot of fun! Here are some of our favorites:

We’re Off to Find the Witch’s House: Words cannot express how much we ADORE this book. Everything about it is amazing – the text is witty and fun, and the illustrations are gorgeous. We randomly picked this one up at a grocery store in Forks, WA and absolutely love it!

5 Minute Spooky Stories: This one isn’t exactly “Halloween” despite the title. The first one about Wreck-It-Ralph has a Halloween party, but the others are most “scary” in a mild sort of way. Still fun. Bought from Amazon and read on our Nexus 10 device.

Clifford’s Halloween: Clifford is a classic. One that we all loved reading!

At the Old Haunted House: A fun counting book full of ghosts, goblins, werewolves, and plenty of other monsters. We’ve read this one over and over!

The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat: The cubs find out that people are not always what they seem. Great lesson as always!

Skeleton for Dinner: Disaster occurs when Skeleton thinks the witches want to eat him for dinner!

Goodnight, Little Monster: Monsters! What could be more Halloween than that? Follow Little Monster as he gets ready for bed.

The Night Before Halloween:  Well written spin off of the classic “Night Before Christmas”. Cara always asks why the children run away from the witch. Wouldn’t you run?

The Halloween Hustle: Loved the illustrations and the book flows really well.

The Berenstain Bears and the Spooky Old Tree: Three bears explore the inside of a mysterious tree!

The Magic School Bus in the Haunted Museum: Spooky sounds, cobwebs and bats! It’s perfect.

The Not-So-Witchy WitchChildhood favorite of mine! A witch that’s too cute  wants to go out for Halloween with all the other witches.

The Witch Next DoorLove this super old version I got from my mother! Story of a nice witch and her two young friends.

Berenstain Bears and the Ghost of the Forest: The cubs go out on a camping trip and end up seeing the Ghost of the Forest!

Pee Wee Scouts Grumpy Pumpkins: It was fun to have a book that took us a few nights to read. Costume designing, picking out pumpkins and a party at the rest home!

The Pumpkin Smasher: My kids got a kick out of this older one, and the illustrations are just beautiful!

Geronimo Stilton It’s Halloween You ‘Fraidy Mouse: I’ll be honest, the kids had to read this one. Sam and I half listened as GS is not our favorite. They, however, LOVED it.

Geronimo Stilton This Hotel is Haunted: Same deal. I know my kids love it, but we can’t stand the short sentences.

How to Prepare For a Traveling Curren Visit

How to Prepare for a Traveling Curren Visit

One of the things we love about traveling is spending time with friends & family we wouldn’t otherwise see. Whether we are traveling through their town, or make a specific detour, these visits are fun and exciting for all of us. We’ve stayed with or nearby our friends the Graces twice now. Once for Thanksgiving 2013 in Tampa, FL and then they moved to Puyallup, WA where we recently got to see them again in September 2014!

Being experts on having the Curren family as temporary neighbors, they volunteered to write an article for our blog on How to Prepare for a Traveling Curren Visit.

Enjoy!

How to Prepare for a Traveling Curren Visit

by Cassie Grace

First off, Breathe. This isn’t your normal visit. No one one will be stealing your hot water in the morning. You don’t need to pull out the hide-a-bed or musty bedcovers. The beauty of a Curren visit is that they bring their house with them. It turns out, they are more like a temporary neighbor than a house guest.

1. Remember this is normal life for them, but its still a special treat for you.

I am really not fit for human beings until about 1pm after my jog(plod), shower and lunch. Perfect. That meant the Curren kids could do school and Sam could get his work hours in without worrying about offending us. Then we could have fun in the afternoon and evening. Which leads me to….

2. Have books at the ready.

I love this about Rachel, Andrew and Cara. They love books. They devoured several books from my personal library in just a few days. This comes in handy when you want to chat with Jess without much noise.

3. Projects and adventures are great fun, but not every second.

Don’t get me wrong, The Curren clan loves a good museum, park or trail. Do that stuff, but let them rest and relax and enjoy your company too. Can you imagine going full steam like that for months at a time? Phew. Makes me tired just thinking about it!

4. Soak it up.

Poor Sam. I think I may have squeezed his brain dry on a project of mine. I think we ended up talking for 2 1/2 hours on my fledgling business, well into his bedtime. You know Sam. He has so many good ideas, I even took notes. And Jess, I yakked Jess’s ear off about food and cooking. Luckily, they are super cool and hung out with us as much as we all could stand for our short three days.

5. Reflect

The Currens caused Mike and me to reflect and reconsider. A lot. I mean, how outside the box do you want to get? They went from typical suburban family to full-time-homeschooling-adventuring-travelers! They make me want to reach a little further to try somethings a little differently. To get rid of some of my junk. Seriously. If Jess can live in 188 sq feet with less stuff, then I can definitely unload some crap. And go hiking. There is so much to explore in my own city, its time to get out of the house. While I’m not ready or very willing to do the same thing they are, the Currens remind me to change.

So there you have it. Our five top ways to be ready for a Curren visit!
