Back in the Airstream at Jackson Center, Ohio and Going South to Tennessee

Travel Dates: November 3-22, 2015

Getting back to the Airstream felt great! After two weeks with family in Utah, we were excited to have our own, tiny space back. In addition to checking to make sure the repairs went well (which took a few hours and some extra brake adjustments) we wanted to take a tour of the factory.

Every weekday at 2 pm, Airstream gives factory tours. We first enjoyed this tour a little over two years ago, in our pre-Airstream days. Pictures are only allowed in a few places in the factory and the wash bay show in here is one of them. Airstreams are given a thorough wash with an inspector on the inside before the interior insulation and paneling are placed. The tour isn’t amazing for kids, but ours found enough entertainment that it was fun!

After a few weeks of not traveling, we really needed an empty campground to relax. Rachel took on the role of route planner, and found us a great campground outside of Cincinnati, Ohio called Miami Whitewater Forest. Her selection was a huge win, including plenty of space, beautiful fall scenery, and an amazingly cool playground just a skip away from the house. She also researched and found the Newport Aquarium for us to visit for school one day.

We have our blog address on the back window of the Airstream. We love having people ask about it, and even getting emails from people who pass us on the highway! Our favorite campsites are back-in sites, and we decided to add the blog address to the front as well.

Why do we blog? It serves partially as a collection of memories for us, but also is a way for us to share useful information with others. We have learned so much by reading the writing of other travelers and adventure families, and we want to contribute back the things we have learned. Hopefully, others will make fewer mistakes than we do!

Staying in the park also put us close enough to the Trout family to visit. We drove up one evening and had dinner, the kids played, and the adults chatted it up in their Inglenook (yes, I still giggle over that word!). Check out Doug’s write up of our meet up here on his blog.

Headed south, we had a one night stop in Glendale to visit the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln. We had amazingly beautiful weather so we ran around outside, and explored the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln. Inside that memorial is a log cabin as an iconic representation of Abe’s humble beginnings, and there are 56 steps to symbolize his 56 years of life. We counted them at least 5 times.

Cara made this scary mask, and has been jumping out at us repeatedly. I’m not going to lie: she’s startled us more than once.

Our next stop was Mammoth Cave National Park. We had a few options for a tour and opted for the Domes and Dripstones tour. The first half was in the dry portion of the cave, and while there were no formations (stalactites, soda straws, etc.) the narrow passageways and vast caverns were fascinating. The cave system totals over 400 miles long and you could easily spend weeks exploring the underground tunnels.

In all our previous cave visits, we had never seen cave crickets. We made up for that today, with crickets aplenty. These insects travel outside of the cave to eat every few days, but spend the rest of their time down here being gawked at by tourists.

We also took to the trails and managed an 8 mile mountain bike ride with the kids. While the scenery was beautiful not pictured was the whining and complaining that preceded our adventure this afternoon. This ride was long, beautiful, challenging, peaceful, and entirely worth the effort. Adventuring with kids isn’t about everything always magically working out, it is about pushing for it in spite of (and sometimes because of) the obstacles that confront us each day.

We accidentally took the long way to meet up with@ramblingfamily. On the plus side, back roads in Tennessee are gorgeous.

We headed just outside of Nashville, TN to meet up with our friends Jason and Julie of@ramblingfamily. We enjoyed plenty of friends, good conversation, some time on the four-wheelers, and a wonderful campfire. This is the third time we’ve met on the road, and I suspect there will be at least one more.

12107641_911529158901053_174536797_n Stones River Battlefield, TN was the site of one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War. It also occurred over the day Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The Union victory a day later gave weight to the president’s speech.

School today was Jr. Ranger badge #83.#roadschool is awesome.

After the battlefield, we headed inland to Rock Island State Park to meet up with Tim & Amanda Watson. Just a few days before we also found out that Rhonda & Joe Hendricks just lived nearby and they managed to come as well.

Joe is also an incredible wedding photographer and it was fun to have him close by to get great photos!! He captured the one of Sam in the hammock working as well as our group photo.

We often get asked if we miss having a stable community, or neighborhood of friends. Our answer is, “not really”. Turns out the full time life (and Airstream life in particular) has one of the best communities I’ve ever been a part of. People are friendly, helpful, have common interests, and are generally pleasant to be around. We couldn’t ask for a better roving neighborhood of friends.

With road life its never “goodbye” just “see you later!”

One thing that’s great about traveling is meeting up with family and friends. We spent a few days in Chattanooga, TN to visit a cousin of Sam’s. While we were at it, we also ate at Uncle Larry’s and had the most amazing fish we’ve ever tasted.

We also had a pretty relaxing Sunday. Sam wrote on Instagram, “My main take-away was that The Lord plays a long game. If he played a short game, every day would be blissful and trouble free. But he has greater goals for us, and the bumps in the road are often necessary for our own growth: to help us become the people He knows we can be. It is easy to get discouraged with our short-sightedness, and we must trust in Him.”

11931253_1018784061476252_1489492224_n

We had the most amazing breakfast this morning before we left Chattanooga. It was bitterly cold when we woke up, so we pulled out some warm layers and headed out. We had been informed that Arethra Frankensteins has some amazing pancakes. Jess has a special place in her heart for amazing pancakes, so off we went.

The restaurant is in the middle of a residential neighborhood, which means three things: No parking, limited seating, and food good enough to draw fans despite the previous two downsides. All three were true of Aretha Frankensteins.
Luckily for us, the aforementioned cold temperatures limited the crowds, making parking relatively easy. Instead of a 90 minute wait, it was only 20. Space inside the limited interior area is filled with seating, and has no waiting area. A very cold 20 minutes waiting outside was alleviated by warm clothes and some hot chocolate.

The menu looked fantastic, and we planned our meal while waiting. This made ordering fast and easy after getting to our table. We ordered a Fat Stack of their famous pancakes and two egg entrées.

The ambiance inside is perfect. Quirky and odd posters decorate the walls, and the main light is a skateboarding skeleton. The staff is a perfect mix of hospitality and hipster: Tattooed and wonderfully nice and accommodating to our family with three kids.

And the food was wonderful. Their pancakes are thick without being dense; fluffy but somehow crispy. They were wonderful. The egg dishes were also excellent, but somewhat overshadowed by the awesomeness of the pancakes. The three breakfast entrées filled the five of us quite well. Finally full and warm, we paid and left, ready begin a wonderful day.

Indiana Dunes, Chicago, & 2.5 Whirlwind Weeks in Suburban Utah

Travel Dates: October 14 – Nov 3, 2015

We dropped the Airstream off at the factory in Jackson Center, OH for repairs while we flew to Utah to visit family. Everything went off without a hitch – we stayed a night in the terraport, talked with the technician early Wednesday morning and then packed and piled in the car headed for Indiana.

About an hour outside of Chicago is Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (Jr. Ranger Badge!). We had heard it was fabulous and spent the night in our tent in the campground so we could explore. As a bonus we also had dinner with @thestreamlinedlife who are fellow adventure – explorers.

After a short hike and passing off our Jr. Ranger Books Thursday morning, we headed to Chicago and PIZZA! We ate at Giordano’s, saw the Bean and played at Maggie Daley Park which was the most amazing park we have ever seen,

12120345_1911905319034115_447469051_n

We spent the night in a hotel close to Midway airport so we could hop our 8:30am flight the following morning. I couldn’t tell if the kids were more excited to swim in the pool or fly on an airplane.

Once in Utah we knocked out our chores as fast as possible. We had family photos taken by the amazing Kara Elmore, visited the storage unit, had dentist & doctor appointments, I took Rachel and her best friend out for birthday pedicures, we went on a date to the temple and to see The Martian, did the ropes course at the Museum of Natural Curiosity, visited the cemetery where my infant, twin brothers are buried, helped with suburban chores, and got Andrew enrolled in cub scouts.

Whew. Not to mention the half a dozen lunches, meeting up with friends, and other fun things we had going on.

12120461_426155644245674_1048954704_nTwo of our social media get togethers were in Salt Lake. We met up with a family who is living in a small, downtown condo to hike Ensign Peak. It was fun to talk with another minimalist minded family and see how they were making a simpler life work in the city. I also met Alyssa from kidproject.org and we chatted outdoor family blogging and travel while the kids played at the park.

About this time I started going CRAZY. We had been in Utah for over a week and had not made it into the mountains once. In a recent blog post I wrote that I don’t trust myself in Suburbia and that living on the road was actually a cheaters way of getting outdoors and exploring more often. Even though everyone was cranky and tired, and it was going to be chilly I convinced my family, my parents, and my sister-in-law with her 3 kids to hike up to Cecret Lake. It was beautiful, it snowed, and everyone came home much happier!

12120294_385956474947208_1149824681_n

Thursday we attended the wedding of my cousin to her dashing fiance. It was a beautiful ceremony in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple and we all attended a lunch at Olive Garden afterwards. We also spent some time on Temple Square and enjoyed the Visitor Center as well as the model showing the inside of the temple.

12093487_439436579589441_1228564965_n

Friday we hung out with Sam’s parents who had come into town, and also had dinner with Sarah & Ty from the @backroadbennetts. We met these guys last winter in Arizona and it was fun to catch up now that they had officially caught the Airstream travel bug. It was also really therapeutic to sit in their Airstream as we were desperately missing ours.

11355856_1538327259792828_2048120044_n

In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we baptize at 8 years old. Saturday morning before Halloween holiday craziness began, we were able to gather with friends and family and celebrate Andrew’s baptism and his decision to follow Jesus Christ. We are so proud of the young man he is becoming and forever grateful we get to spend so much time with him on a daily basis!

1889260_1486726941629697_54249715_n

We had fun being in Suburbia for Halloween. It was easy to find costumes and we enjoyed time spent with friends & family!

10684130_958481117524317_226636462_n

After a few more family get-together, and some final errands, we left on an early flight Tuesday morning to head back to Chicago. We loved the time we were able to spend with family and friends (and we got A LOT of chores done) but it was definitely time to get back on the road!

I Don’t Trust Myself in Suburbia

Cecret Lake Hike_18

“Just get out the door. Just get out the door,” I chant to myself as things start to look bleak for our afternoon adventure. In a perfect world, our kids jump up, excited to get out the door and explore. The reality, however, usually consists of a whole lot of whining.

“I don’t want to go,” says Rachel, our oldest. “That doesn’t sound fun. Do we have to?”

I sigh, count to ten and then looked at my daughter. “Yes. We really need to get outside. We are going and I want absolutely no more complaining. You’ll feel better when we get there.” The longer we go without hiking, the harder it is to get everyone motivated.

Rachel looks at me doubtfully, but nods realizing she’s lost this battle and heads toward the bedroom to change into her hiking pants.

We have been staying with my parents in Utah for over a week and this was the first opportunity we had to get outside on a hike. With Little Cottonwood Canyon only about 20 minutes away, I feel like a complete failure because it has taken us so long to carve out an afternoon to get up there. We are advocates for an active, outdoor, adventure, family-oriented lifestyle so what does that say about me when I can’t even get us out the door in over a week?

It says that life in Suburbia is hard and we are cheaters.

There’s something about being in a house (luckily not my own) that makes me lazy. As a family, its so much easier to spread out into the far corners of the house and be completely unaware of each other. The kids are upstairs playing nicely, so I’ll jump on my laptop for a few minutes and suddenly an hour goes by and I have no idea what anyone else doing. Its much easier to let the kids stay inside and play with toys than it is to grab our gear and hit the trails. Its even easier to let grandma play with the kids while I “get things done”.

I just don’t trust myself in a “normal,” suburban lifestyle. I don’t have the willpower to get us outside and exploring from a house, and I love how much we’ve been able to explore over the last two years from our Airstream. Its cheating. We don’t have to deal with soccer, or cub scout meetings, or neighborhood friends, or all the other distractions that pull us away from each other and use up all of our time. Don’t get me wrong – those things can be good. They just aren’t what is best for us right now.

As we hike up the hill towards Cecret Lake, I watch my kids break up ice in the frozen stream, and stare with wonder at the sky as it starts to snow. They run up the trail with their cousins, and for the first time in over a week I start to relax. I knew we’d all feel better after a little outdoor therapy, but I never realize how much better until we get there.

Rachel looks over at me and smiles. “Thanks for bringing us up here,” she says. “Its so nice to be back outside!”

I know exactly what she means.

Rachel Turns 10 While Sleeping Under the Giant – Ontario, Canada

Sleeping Giant Provincial Park_12

September 15, 2015

Dear Rachel,

You are growing up so fast and I love that we get to spend some much time watching it! I’m truly grateful for this journey of ours and that I can be by your side most of the time. Its a great honor and a blessing!

You are turning into quite the young lady. Sometimes I see you debating whether or not you want to act young and silly like your siblings, or if you are “too old” for whatever mischief they are cooking up. I love how you encourage and support both Cara and Andrew and are a great example to both of them!

Lately you love to babysit your siblings and really love it when mom and dad leave for a few hours. You are very responsible and a huge help getting the house cleaned up and everyone tucked in bed. Its fantastic and I’m so proud of you. At the same time you also love to tease and are quite the mischief maker yourself sometimes!

You love to read (still!), play Lego’s, braid your American Girl Doll’s hair, explore, draw, and play games with the family. We have watched you conquer your fears numerous times and appreciate and encourage your determination to always be better.

We are so grateful to have you in our family!

Love,

Mom & Dad

Sleeping Giant Provincial Park_06

Rachel’s birthday was pretty simple this year. We had plans to fly back to Utah in October (plane tickets as birthday presents!), but we still wanted to get her a little something to open on her birthday. We found a Friends Lego Set we thought she’d love and Andrew & Cara both picked out some treats. It amazed me how a new, small Lego set could promote a two week frenzy of Lego playing with ALL the Lego’s. It was awesome.

We were camped in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park in Ontario Canada during our Circle Tour of Lake Superior. The area was beautiful, remote, peaceful, and exactly what we all needed. The kids loved throwing rocks in the water and building out their little breakwater.

There are plenty of trails and lakes in the area, but we didn’t want to overdo the two days we had there. We drove the long dusty road out to the Thunder Bay Lookout, hiked out to the Sea Lion, read in the hammock and generally relaxed. We loved being there in the off season as there were plenty of open spots right next to the water, few campers, and cooler temperatures.

Sleeping Giant Provincial Park_13

Rachel had requested Greek Gyros for dinner and then we surprised her with a birthday cake, but no candles since the Canadian Wal-Mart we visited didn’t have any! It was a great spot, and Rachel loved that we were in Canada for her birthday.

Announcing the CurrentlyWandering Youtube Channel

YouTube ChannelI am pleased to announce yet another place that you can follow along on your adventures: Our YouTube Channel! We blog about our adventures for detail and philosophical ramblings. We post pictures on our Instagram accounts to share places and short form experiences. We’ve been experimenting with video, and we like the way it allows us to remember places with greater detail and emotion. We love watching old videos and remembering the adventures we captured.

When I say ‘experiment’ with video, I really mean it. I have over 60 videos posted on that channel, but we’ve never said much about it on our other channels. Really, this was a way for me to hide a bit as I experimented with different video and editing styles. I’ve tried and swapped equipment, editing software, and both filming and editing styles. This doesn’t mean I have it dialed in: I will warn you that I’m still not particularly good, and I hope to be improving as I continue.

My most recent video is about a wonderful and unexpected day in the Porcupine Mountains on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We had a wonderful day, and I’m happy with how my shooting and editing went. Have a look, and tell me what you think!

My main motivation for capturing video has been mostly as the ‘new’ form of home video. Keeping individual video clips on my phone doesn’t help tell a story. Editing down a video forces me to filter what I captured and attempt to thread it together. I love what we’ve been able to capture, and the benefit it is to us. In the spirit of sharing, my videos are public and you can follow along too, if you like.

I’m slightly behind on editing at the moment, having just begun to edit the video we captured on our Lake Superior Circle Tour. If you subscribe to the channel, you will next see videos about Backpacking in the Apostle Islands and our other adventures as we circle the lake.
