Celebrating Rachel’s 9th Birthday – Portland, OR & Elbe, WA

Rachel Birthday 2014_03

Dear Rachel,

You are turning in to quite the young lady! I’m so proud of you. As the oldest there’s kind of a lot of responsibility, but you shoulder it well. You are good to your brother and sister and are great at organizing play and having fun!

Like your brother, you also LOVE to read. I love this about you guys. You’ll wake up and read for an hour before even coming to find us. You love going to used bookstores with me and finding treasures. I can’t keep up with how many books you guys read. It’s fantastic!

You also love to cross stitch, make bracelets with your loom band (I swear you have over 30 by now!), play Barbies, Lego Friends, and help me cook in the kitchen. You are constantly asking if there’s anything you can do to help make dinner, and your favorite thing is to chop veggies using the chef’s knife. You’ve learned how to make tuna sandwiches for everyone and we’re working on mac and cheese.

I loved when you watched the Women’s Conference broadcast with me the other week and really tried to listen. You love our church, Heavenly Father, and Jesus Christ and do your best to be good and listen and understand at church. I’m sad you are missing out on Activity Days with friends, but grateful that we can work on it together!

I’m proud of your creativity, your love of art, and your love and support of our family. I’m so grateful that you are ours!

Love,

Mom (and Dad!)

Rachel Birthday 2014_01

Rachel’s birthday was a bit chaotic this year. As she put it, “Monday is the WORST day to have a birthday!” Luckily, she is amazing and rolled with it when all our plans went sideways.

Her birthday was the last day we planned to be in Portland, OR and out of all the activities we planned to do while we were there, she picked visiting OMSI (the Science Museum everyone raved to us about!). On Sunday afternoon when I went to look up their schedule, we found it is closed on Mondays! Plan ruined.

“That’s okay, mom. We’ll find something else fun to do.” See? Rolling with it.

Starting out in the morning, daddy made Pletta (Swedish pancakes) for her breakfast, and while he cooked she opened her presents from Andrew, Cara, and the grandparents. G&G Madsen got her an Elsa Doll with the idea that if she wanted a different one (they were extremely hard to come by right then) or something else I could take her shopping later. G&G Curren sent money for Kindle Books (always love that!), Cara wanted to get her a HUGE bag of candy corn, and Andrew picked out a new snorkel and fins since we accidentally left ours at Camp Noyo over the summer.

Rachel Birthday 2014_04

After breakfast, Rachel and I decided to take the Elsa doll back and get her a loom case for all her bands, loom, and c-clips. We found one at Michael’s that she loved and was immediately happy with.

Since we were in Portland, the idea was to go out for lunch to some local food trucks only it turns out the ones we chose were not open for lunch. A little disappointed, but undaunted, we googled up a nearby pizza place and went out for pizza instead. Crisis #2 deflected.

We then spent a few hours searching bike shops in the area for a new bike for Rachel. In our haste to upgrade her in the spring, we ended up with a fairly lousy department store bike which just doesn’t fly in this family. She went from loving biking to absolutely hating it and that just made us sad! Knowing we needed something with better shifting capability, but not wanting to to spend a lot of money (pretty tricky!), we managed to find a used Diamondback in her size for $100. Sold. She is SO much happier now!

After dropping everyone else back off at the Airstream, Rachel and I went to pick up her pre-ordered Frozen figurine cake from the nearby Safeway. Learning my lesson from last year, I had ordered one instead of trying to take the time to make it. On impulse, I called ahead to make sure it was ready. They couldn’t find it. They didn’t have the order. They had no idea what I was talking about.

My poor mama bear came out and I’m afraid I was not so nice over the phone. Meanwhile, Rachel is bawling in the backseat because that’s the ONE thing she REALLY wanted for her birthday. We arrived at the Safeway, and the assistant manager was amazing. She immediately apologized, said they found the order but it wasn’t done and set about making it right. Rachel picked out a cake, the manager added her name and the Frozen toys (which was a nice touch even if the cake wasn’t all decorated according to theme), had us pick out ice cream and refused to let us pay for any of it. Totally above and beyond, and Rachel left feeling hopeful and happy! It really made her day!

We were staying in the neighborhood of some traveling friends, and had plans for dinner and birthday cake at their house. Although late, we managed to make it over there and had a great evening (even if the only camera I had on hand was my phone). It was fun to be able to celebrate with friends and have a little party!

While her birthday didn’t turn out quite the way she expected, she was happy and I think that’s what matters most!

Later that week, we were able to follow-up on Mom & Dad’s present of horseback riding (She was excited she only had to wait a few days!). Still promoting experiences rather than presents, she decided this was the activity she wanted to do most. Luckily, I found an outfitter nearby that did 1 hour trail rides up into the hills near Elbe, WA. They were fantastic! It ended up being just the two guides (one younger girl about Rachel’s age) and us. We wound up through the forest, to an overlook of Alder Lake and then back down. They even graciously took us the “really long way” back because it was for Rachel’s birthday.

My horse was a little spirited, but I was up for the challenge, and they put Rachel on a sweet, gentle horse that could do no wrong. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen her giggle as much as she did when we urged those horses to a trot. She was in heaven.

If you are ever in the area, I definitely recommend giving EZ Times Horse Rentals a call. I couldn’t recommend them more! Oh, and while you are in the area. Stay at Alder Lake and eat some Pizza in a Train. Super fun area of Washington!

Malware and Pandemonium

Last week we had a malware attack on the blog, right during an out-of-signal stint at Mt. Rainier. The resulting pandemonium has wrenched the schedule a bit and induced more stress than we care to admit. The good news is that we have the malware removed. The bad news is that doing so left huge parts of the blog broken. Our content is still here but stuff like the newsletter and other plugins need some work before they will be back online. Blogging will be a little light while we get the rest of this sorted, but we’ll keep it flowing. Instagram remains the best place to remain current with our travels. Follow @currentlywandering for the best images of our travels, and @jesscurren and @telegramsam for daily happenings.

In the meantime, enjoy a beautiful example of balanced rocks. We discovered this on our bike ride around the seawall in Stanley Island, Vancouver BC yesterday, and I was impressed. I’ve seen lots of rock stacks, but most take advantage of naturally flat sides. This stack was constructed of purposefully chosen round-ish rocks, highlighting the perfect balance found by the artist. To capture this image I had to scramble off the seawall path wearing my mountain cycling shoes. The shoes work well, as long as I carefully avoid the cleat when stepping on rocks. I need to watch someone do this someday.

Celebrating Andrew’s 7th Birthday – Grants Pass, OR & Camp Dakota

SAM_2069-Edit

August 24, 2014

Dear Andrew,

You have turned 7 years old! I can’t believe it! Just yesterday I swear I was dropping you off for your first day of pre-school. You’ve grown so much over the last year of our travels and I’m very proud of you.

You love to read. If traveling has given you anything else, its your love of books. You read well beyond your years, and lately have taken a break from Secrets of Droon and replaced them with Percy Jackson books. You are obsessed! You’ll read them over and over if I don’t keep up with providing new library books on the Kindle.

Lately you and Cara have been best buddies. I love the way you encourage her, play with her and include her in your activities. I love watching you two run down the trails together sometimes even holding hands. You are a great big brother! Being the middle kid isn’t easy, and you do well spending time with Rachel as well. Sometimes you’ll even give in a play Barbies with her just because she really wants to! Such a good sport.

You are doing well with school! Your grade level has always been a little fuzzy, but I’m thinking you are solidly in 2nd grade now. Math seems to be a favorite sometimes, and writing tends to be everybody’s least favorite subject.

You still love to play the tablet and computer games, although our system of 30 minutes 4x a week has worked out well. You love playing Minecraft especially when you and Rachel can “hook” your accounts and play together.

You have a sweet and gentle personality, something I never expected from a boy but its my favorite thing about you. You talk constantly to anyone that will listen and recently hiked up to Wizard Island at Crater Lake talking the ear off of complete strangers the whole way up and then back down. It was hilarious. I hope you never grow out of your assertiveness and its a characteristic that will always serve you well.

We love you Andrew. We are so grateful you are in our family!

Love, Mom & Dad

This was our first kid’s birthday in the Airstream. I knew we were setting a precedent with whatever we did, so needless to say I was a little stressed out. Not that I needed to be. Our kids are so great! Rachel and I went shopping the week before (without Andrew) and picked up wrapping paper, orange plates & cups and a few presents. We had decided as a family that mom and dad were giving “experiences” not gifts, but there were still a few to open from siblings and grandparents. Per tradition, Andrew opened presents first and then we got down to the business of eating his German Pancake breakfast.

IMG_9413 Later that morning, Andrew helped me make his cupcakes.

SAM_2055 Once Sam returned from his trip to the Medford temple, we hit up the local swimming pool for the afternoon. Swimming in a “real” pool as on his list for the day (not a river because those are too cold!).

IMG_20140823_153001_1 I decided to pull out some middle school diving moves and Sam, the good sport that he is, tried to tackle them along with me. For the record, this is his first attempt ever at a walking bounce dive off the board.

That evening we ate broiled Parmesan Tillapia, spaghetti, and broccoli and then watched the banjo player at the campground amphitheater. Oh yeah, this guy also lost his second tooth while we were at the pool!

SAM_2060

A few weeks later we were able to cash in on his present of a… Zipline tour! He’s wanted to zipline since we passed one in Utah over the summer, and we finally found a reason to let him. Having our kids choose experiences over presents has been so much fun for everyone!

In researching zipline tours, we found that many had height/weight restrictions and that Andrew was just too little. Camp Dakota, however, will let kids ride tandem with a parent so we put that on the schedule! Camp Dakota is a surprisingly beautiful family adventure camp about 30 minutes outside of Silverton, Oregon. We got a weekend deal for a campsite for 2 nights, coupons for activities, and a discount on the zipline tour. It was a blast! We did the zipline first thing Saturday morning, and then spent the rest of the day climbing the rockwall, playing disc golf, throwing tomahawks, and the adults sneaking off for a round or two of paintball!

After his first zip, the guides determined Andrew could go by himself. He absolutely loved it!

It was a great day! I’m so proud of him and his ability to adapt to new situations and just roll with it.What a good kid!

A Game of Tetris – Fitting Our Garage in the Truck

We use the bed of our truck as a garage: It has some tools, some chairs, a generator, bike helmets, our BBQ, and other various items. Covering the bed is a Retrax rolling bed cover. I added yakima rails on top of that, so we could load the bikes just above the bed of the truck.

To show you how it all goes together, here is a video of packing the truck, sped up just a bit. This was recorded the day we drove away from our house in Lehi, UT. The new owners (of the house) showed up in the middle of the video actually, so I cut the piece where we were talking to them.

We take the truck bed from empty to packed, then add the rack and the bikes. On the road, we rarely remove the rack entirely, and just access the bed contents through the back hatches or between the bike racks.

Having the back of the truck has been great. While we could tow with something like an SUV, the truck gives us an ‘outside space’ to keep things. We carry a generator and a 2 gallon gas can, and those cannot be carried in the interior of a vehicle. As it stays ‘outside’ I never have to empty the gas from the generator.

The bed cover and bike racks deserve their own posts, so I’ll save the details on those for another time.

Where Have You Wandered This Summer?

SAM_1189 copy

It’s Labor Day. The annual end-of-summer holiday. I can’t believe that soon we will be feeling the crisp autumn air, eating pumpkin pie, and getting ready for Halloween.

Our travels have motivated us to ‘wander’ in the places we visit. We wander to parks, visitor centers, forests, and towns just because there is something interesting there. Our current wandering habits have helped us realize how much we missed out in the places we lived, simply because we didn’t wander enough! We lived in Lehi, UT for about 5 years, and somehow didn’t make it up to visit the Timpanogos Caves, just a few miles from where we lived! Upon our return to sell the house, we rectified that situation and got ourselves up there, and we had a great time.

SAM_1127 copy

Part of our motivation for blogging and sharing the stories of our own exploring and wandering was to encourage and motivate others. We don’t expect everybody to take off in an Airstream, but we DO hope that our adventures have encouraged you to explore, wander, and enjoy life just a little more.

Is there a local adventure that you have managed to miss out on? Is there some place that you are waiting to visit? GO! Live your Dream! Then share it with us.

Seriously, we’d love to hear about your adventures. Where did you wander this summer? Was it full of lazy days spent by the pool? Did you finally take that amazing family vacation? Where did you wander to?

Please share a bit of your adventure with us. If you blog, instagram, or facebook, share us a link of stuff already posted. Or email us directly (samandjesscurrenATgmailDOTcom) with some pictures and your story. We would like to periodically share the stories of others and further promote wandering awesomeness.

We hope your fall is just as amazing as your summer!
