Merry Christmas from the Currently Wandering Crew!

postcard_template_us

We loved sending out our Christmas postcards this year, and had so much putting them together. We chose to print them through moo.com so we could use 10 different photos on the front. It was so hard to narrow it down! Each photo reminds us of a special place, story, or adventure and we are extremely grateful for the support of our friends & family that we’ve had along this crazy journey of ours. If you haven’t read it yet, here’s the link to our 2014 Christmas Letter as well!

Which card did you get in the mail? Let us know in the comments below!

Cascade Head Hike_13 Hiking Cascade Head (blog post) along the rainy Oregon coast last October. Its amazing the views we can get when we rise above and conquer the challenges that come our way. The kids were awesome hikers on this trip, including dodging Elk droppings and some muddy sections of trail.
Crater Lake_67 We decided to do the boat tour at Crater Lake National Park – making it one of our most favorite experiences (blog post). The amazing blue water lacks both a major inlet and any major outlet, leaving the water undisturbed and amazingly clear. In the middle of the tour, were were dropped off at Wizard Island, a small cinder cone within the lake itself. We hiked to the top and ate lunch before hiking back down for the rest of the tour around the lake.
Point Reyes Seashore_037 Point Reyes National Seashore (blog post) in Northern California. This picturesque lighthouse requires a long drive AND a long stair walk to enjoy. The day was perfect, and we even got to look inside the lighthouse at the lens and turning mechanism. We stayed in the redwoods at the nearby Samuel P. Taylor State Park, where we enjoyed the trees, some good rain, and used our generator for the first time. Sam visited this lighthouse multiple times as a kid, and it was awesome to return here with our kids.
Redwood Forests_02 After leaving Camp Noyo (blog post) and a wonderful time with family, we enjoyed our freedom from a schedule with a 2 week meander through the Redwood National & State Parks. This area is beautiful and has so much to explore! One of our favorite spots was along the Avenue of Giants near Humboldt Redwoods State Park. We loved the giant trees, fungus, and generally lack of anything better to do or anywhere to be.
Redwood Forests_09 Our only vertical image was the ONLY way to try and represent the majesty of these wonderful trees. This was during one of our walks to see the majestic trees! We love this photo because it always reminds us to look up and enjoy the world around us. We had a great time here and earned many Jr. Ranger Badges (blog post) but after two weeks were ready to go inland out of the coastal fog.
Trinidad_16 Trinidad State Park was one of our stops along the Northern California Coast (blog post). One evening we ventured out to hike around Trinidad Head and found this beach just as the fog was rolling in off the ocean. Not one to miss a perfectly opportune photo moment, Jess had the kids race along the beach yelling “Come get me!”. Well, they did.
Utah Salt Flats_13 Driving home from the Bay Area last April, we had a lot on our plates. We had received an offer on our house and were racing home to make sure we still wanted to sell it. Our only concession along the route was an epic photo shoot with the Airstream on the Bonneville Salt Flats before we drove into Salt Lake City the following morning (blog post).
Crater Lake NP_29 Another photo from Crater Lake, but this one from the rim! We spent three days in this park, and could have easily spent weeks more had we a better internet signal! We enjoyed hiking along the rim and enjoying the views of Wizard Island from up top as well as down on the lake.
IMG_0588-Edit Late in October we spent some time along the Oregon Coast. This was a beautiful afternoon spent at Cape Disappointment State Park (definitely did NOT live up to its name) on one of the few clear days we had. We spent many afternoons all along the coast flying our kite in the winds kicked up by the volatile coastal weather. The day after this epic afternoon, we had one of our worst mornings when we discovered the raccoons had gotten into our truck (blog post).
John Day Fossil Beds_09 We desperately needed a break from the Oregon coastal rain, so we took a chance and drove inland via Bend, OR over to the Painted Hills and the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Although we drove many more miles than normal, the drive was worth it as the national park turned out to be one of our favorites!

Yosemite National Park to Rainbow Basin, CA

10831808_594193454060749_1290456079_n

Travel Dates: December 6-12, 2014

What a great week!! We decided to head to Yosemite from the Oakland Temple, just because we could. We stayed in a little RV park outside the National Park for the weekend, and drove the hour into the Valley Visitor Center Monday morning. We then proceeded to hike about 10 miles, gaining 2000 feet in elevation up to Nevada Falls via the Mist trail and back down the JMT. We are SO incredibly proud of our kids and their little legs! I still can’t believe we pulled it off. After leaving Yosemite we headed south, met up with some friends in Bakersfield and finally landed in the Rainbow Basin Natural Area outside of Barstow, CA. The desert greeted us the first night with the most amazing sunset!

From here we will head to Las Vegas on Sunday, and then pack the Airstream away into storage while we drive to Sandy, UT to be with family for Christmas!

It Feels Good to Break a Sweat: My Newest Workout Routine

Mobile Gym

Trying to exercise with our unpredictable schedule has been one of the biggest challenges for me of our full time travel. I posted back in January about my failure of an attempt at working out, and although things aren’t much better, I feel like I have a few more tricks up my sleeve.

We have some smaller equipment that we keep on hand – most of them purchased through Amazon at some point:

Jump Rope
5 lb weights
12 lb weights
Exercise Mat
Arm band for my phone
Exercise head phones
Foam Roller

I will still occasionally get on a road ride (like this short one back in Oregon near John Day), but in reality I have 30 minutes or less to get my workout in. So, I get creative. Most weeks I manage to get in 2-3 workouts, but when we are slammed busy driving, or hanging around friends/family, or just plain BUSY (lame excuse) that number dwindles significantly.

I find that when I do make time to regularly exercise I’m much happier and even eat healthier. Balancing travel planning, home schooling, grocery shopping, hiking, and everything else does present its challenges, but before we are done traveling I’m going to make it work! Here’s what I’m currently doing:

Workout DVD’s

I have a friend who is a Beach Body consultant (check out her Instagram feed for awesome tips & recipes!), and she introduced me to Shaun T’s Focus T25 series. I have both the Alpha & Beta and I really like them. I feel like I get a great workout in, and it just doesn’t take very long. Yes, I’m typically outside in the campground where everyone can see me, but I’ve just developed a thick skin. I’ll try and find some privacy, but its usually me, half of our outdoor mat, and my computer. Good times.

Since then, I’ve also purchased the PiYo series which I like, but not quite as much. I’ve just never been into Yoga, but its a good mix of Pilates and Yoga and I don’t get quite as sweaty while still working on muscle development.

Smart Phone Apps

When we hike, bike, or walk (and even sometimes when weight lifting) I’ll track with Endomondo (Android, iPhone). I know there are others out there, we just invested in a Pro account years ago and I love it so I haven’t found a reason to change.

Nike Training Club (iPhone, Android) – this one has its pros and some serious cons. Its a little confusing at first and I hate that once I start a 4 week program I’m stuck to it. It gets depressing when I want to do a workout on Tuesday instead of Sunday and it won’t count towards my total minutes.

To compensate I just pick workouts and fit them in when I can. Maybe it’s not “ideal” but at least its something. I also hate that if your phone crashes you can’t start back in the middle of a workout. Or maybe that’s a plus… “Look! I’m done 15 minutes early!” 🙂 I do like the workouts I’ve have completed and definitely feel sore the next day!

Better Diet

I loved it when my friend posted a Clean Eating Challenge on Instagram a few months ago. It was awesome! We’ve been really trying to eat simpler, healthy meals. Lots of fruits, veggies, and ditch the processed stuff. I no longer buy crackers, or processed snacks (except Z bars & ropes from Costco, but those are for hiking or driving days) and we stick to carrots, cucumber, broccoli and hummus. Yes, we still eat ice cream, candy, and other not good for you items, but we eat them LESS. It’s a start.

Shakeology is seriously my favorite meal replacement drink. We’ve done a lot of Costco Protein powder, but this stuff just works. I’m the only one that drinks it (because its so darn expensive) and I can tell when I’m not consistent. I find it even more important at helping me maintain my weight because my workouts are so inconsistent. If I just got on the ball, maybe my numbers would actually start to go down…. wouldn’t that be nice?

The Ideal Schedule

In an ideal world, I’d have an actual workout schedule instead of trying to fit it in whenever. I was thinking this last week it would go something like this:

Monday: Nike Training Club 30 minutes
Tuesday: T25
Wednesday: Run (even though I still HATE it)
Thursday: Nike Training Club
Friday: PiYo

Sounds good, right? We’ll see…. What’s your favorite way to work out?

Shopping on Amazon This Year?

Amazon Affiliate Link

If you are anything like me, you’d rather spend your time browsing Amazon.com for the perfect rather than wandering through a shopping center. Its no secret I don’t love shopping, and anything delivered right to my door is WAY better than having to go out and buy it myself.

Last year we had Christmas in Houston and my aunt & uncle were kind enough to let us ship stuff ahead and we had a whole stack waiting for us when we arrived a few days before the 25th. It was awesome.

This year my parents are doing the same, although we’ll have a few extra days to figure out any special gifts and even buy them locally.

My point is, if you like to shop on Amazon.com would you consider clicking through our Affiliate link when you do so?

We’d much appreciate it. Affiliate links are great because you get the same price and we get a few pennies to add to our book fund for sending you there. Most of our accessory posts have affiliate links, not to be malicious, but because we only link to products we really love and earning a few pennies while we are at it is not such a bad deal.

Happy Shopping!

Finishing Up Projects, Marin Headlands, and Oakland

Nov 29 - Dec 5 2014

Travel Dates: November 29 – Dec 5, 2014

Picked up a little wandering action this week as Jess visited the Marin Headlands and the Point Bonita lighthouse with the kids. We also spent time courtesy parking with friends, finishing up wood projects, and finally heading out of Petaluma after two weeks of bumping around town!

We drove about 1.5 hours to the Oakland temple where we’ve been in the RV parking spots for 2 nights. Its been fabulous as we’ve been able to both do an endowment session, take the kids to see the Christmas lights, and even do sealings together! After visiting with friends in Mtn View last night, we’re calling it done in this area and headed to Yosemite today!
